Getting a Brick Patio Right
Three decisions drive the result: brick hardness, pattern, and edge restraint. Get hardness wrong and the surface spalls. Get the edge wrong and the field creeps. Pattern is where the design lives-running bond for calm, herringbone for movement, basket weave for a courtyard read.
Dry-laid on compacted base with sand joints is forgiving in expansive clay and easy to reset around a utility cut. Mortar-set over slab is the better answer for pool decks and formal terraces.

Questions we get asked
How much brick for a 400 sq.ft patio?
At roughly 4.5 brick per sq.ft laid flat with a tight joint, 400 sq.ft needs about 1,800 brick before waste. Add 10–15% on herringbone or radial work and 5–10% on straightforward running bond, so call it 1,900–2,100. Send us the dimensions and the pattern and we will do it properly.
Will weeds come up through the joints?
Some, on dry-laid work — that is the trade-off for a surface that drains and can be lifted and reset. Polymeric sand in the joints reduces it considerably. Mortared over slab avoids it almost entirely, at the cost of being harder to repair.
Can we lay brick over an existing concrete patio?
Yes, if the slab is sound, drains away from the house, and you have the height to spare at doors and thresholds. Brick is mortar-bedded over the slab in that case. If the slab is cracked or heaving, deal with that first — a new surface will not fix a failing base.
